Drainage of window ledges

When a home has basement windows that are in direct contact with the ground, or are partly below ground level, they do not always have suitable ledges or drainage.

Rainwater accumulates in the ledge and the window, soaking the foundation and then infiltrating the structure, causing damage along the way.

Your window installations and foundations could be severely damaged; humidity can cause rotting and result in the proliferation of bacteria and fungi.

There are several solutions possible

  • Alter the ground level to clear the area around the window
  • Protect the window with a wood or metal ledge
  • The bottom of the ledge must be filled with gravel and a perforated pipe, much like the one used in a French drain, to ensure proper drainage
